A Bay Area native, Mr. Rolando graduated magna cum laude from Saint Mary’s College of California before moving to Indiana to attend law school at the University of Notre Dame. In law school, Mr. Rolando excelled in written and oral advocacy and was selected by faculty members to join the Moot Court Board. As a member of the Board, he had the unique honor of representing Notre Dame at the American Bar Association’s National Appellate Advocacy Competition.
Following graduation, he earned recognition as law clerk to the Chief Judge of Michigan’s 43rd Judicial Circuit Court. Mr. Rolando was responsible for critically evaluating all civil and criminal motions, making recommendations to the Judge and drafting the Court’s orders and opinions. The experience of working in chambers has given Mr. Rolando significant exposure to motion practice and trial work from the court’s perspective.
Mr. Rolando has also clerked for both the Alameda and San Mateo County District Attorneys’ Offices. There he learned how prosecutors approach charging decisions, plea negotiations, trial preparation, jury selection, and sentencing recommendations. This experience has proven critical to Mr. Rolando’s federal appellate practice, as he was selected by the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit to represent criminal defendants on appeal under the Criminal Justice Act.
Recognizing his experience and commitment to furthering professionalism, Mr. Rolando has also been appointed to leadership positions in professional organizations. Notably, he was appointed Vice-Chair of the Criminal Justice Committee for the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division in 2011. There he was responsible for implementing educational programs for young practitioners throughout the country.
